On the sidelines of the United Nations Food Systems Summit held yesterday in Addis Ababa, Italy and Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding that marks a significant step forward in bilateral cooperation. The Italy Ethiopia fisheries agreement, an integral part of a broader partnership on agriculture and food processing, was officially signed by Italian Minister Francesco Lollobrigida and Ethiopian Minister Girma Amente.
Building on strong diplomatic ties and the success of the 2023 coffee supply chain initiative, the agreement falls within the operational framework of the Mattei Plan, aiming to promote the sustainable development of agro-food, fisheries and livestock value chains. For the fisheries sector, it opens up new opportunities for technical and commercial cooperation in a region rich in inland and coastal water resources—assets still underutilized but essential for future food security.
The five-year renewable Memorandum includes joint investment strategies in fish production and trade, and promotes the adoption of innovative food processing technologies. In this context, the Italy Ethiopia fisheries agreement could become a valuable entry point for Italian seafood companies seeking to export know-how, processing plants and integrated supply chain models.
Another strategic area of cooperation is traceability. The agreement highlights the importance of strengthening certification systems and geographical indications, including those for fishery products. This supports not only food safety, but also enhances access to international markets for Ethiopian products.
A Joint Committee composed of representatives from both Ministries will oversee the implementation of the agreement. This committee will meet annually, alternating between Ethiopia and Italy, to ensure institutional coordination and effective project execution.
For the Italian fisheries industry, the Italy Ethiopia fisheries agreement represents a strategic gateway to a growing continent. Africa is increasingly focused on diversifying production and modernizing food infrastructure, making it a fertile ground for collaboration. At the same time, the deal strengthens the global reach of Italy’s seafood sector, which can contribute with technology, expertise, and entrepreneurial capacity.
Both Ministers expressed their satisfaction with the agreement, underlining its alignment with a shared vision: to enhance food system resilience through partnership, innovation, and local economic development.
