Fish consumption: Italy and Spain diverge

Fish consumption: Italy and Spain diverge

The demographic geography of Europe is reshaping food demand, and the seafood sector is among the most sensitive observers. Looking at two countries with strong traditions and well-established industries—Italy and Spain—we can see that fish consumption is now following opposite trajectories. Two Mediterranean markets that share history and food culture, yet react differently to demographic shifts.

In Spain, seafood consumption remains among the highest in Europe, with per capita values above the EU average, consolidating the country as a Mediterranean benchmark. Italy, on the other hand, shows lower levels, though in recent years a steady upward trend has emerged. This gap is not merely statistical—it reflects deep structural differences in demographic and social dynamics.

According to Eurostat, Spain exceeded 48 million inhabitants in 2024, growing by more than one million over the past decade. Italy dropped to 58.9 million, losing about 1.3 million over the same period. Median age highlights the divide: Italy, at 48.4 years and with 24% over 65, ranks among the oldest countries in the world; Spain stops at a median age of 45 and 21% over 65.

These factors strongly shape product assortments. In Italy, demand is tied to the silver economy: health-focused, practical, single-portion products, with increasing attention to traceability and sustainability. In Spain, a younger and expanding population sustains broader, more diversified consumption, open to experimentation.

For the Italian supply chain, this framework opens complementary scenarios. Defending the domestic market means adapting to a mature and selective consumer; looking to Spain, however, offers a more dynamic context that may represent not only competition, but also opportunities for export and a testing ground for product innovation.

The comparison between fish consumption in Italy and Spain shows how demographics today act as a competitive driver. Those who interpret it not just as a statistical fact but as a strategic compass will gain an advantage in reshaping supply and seizing new opportunities.
