Mitilla Earns National Sustainable Aquaculture Certification

Mitilla has been awarded the National Sustainable Aquaculture Certification, the official mark that recognizes compliance with the highest environmental, social, and economic standards in marine production. It’s a milestone that reflects our team’s daily commitment to protecting the sea, promoting artisanal work, and building a transparent and responsible supply chain.

Our mussel farm operates in class “A” waters off the coast of Pellestrina, without the use of feed, chemicals, or antibiotics. Mitilla mussels grow in harmony with nature and play an active role in improving water quality thanks to their natural filtering ability — a virtuous process that supports marine ecosystem health and environmental regeneration.

For us, this certification is more than just a label: it’s the official recognition of a working method based on care, consistency, and responsibility. Choosing Mitilla means choosing a product that is good, safe, traceable — and fair.
Lorenzo Busetto, founder of Mitilla and son of a long line of mussel farmers, comments:
“We’ve always believed our job wasn’t just to produce mussels, but to take care of the sea and the land. This certification is the result of a shared effort — from those who work on the boats every day to those dreaming of a cleaner future for Pellestrina.”

Genny Busetto, Mitilla’s commercial manager, adds:
“For us, sustainability also means community. We want Mitilla to be an example of a company that creates local value, jobs, and identity. This recognition helps us better share who we are — in Italy and abroad.”

Mitilla was born in Pellestrina, a unique island rich in nature, history, and tradition. Our project is deeply rooted in the protection of this territory: we’re committed to improving the waters where we farm, supporting maritime culture, promoting conscious tourism, and fostering a circular economy that starts from — and enriches — the local community.

Today we celebrate a major achievement, but we’re already looking ahead — firmly believing that true sustainability isn’t a badge, but a journey made every day, together, with knowledge, vision, and respect.
