Prysmian joins AERO: boost for Italy’s offshore wind – It is now official: Prysmian has joined AERO, the Italian Offshore Renewable Energy Association. This milestone marks a turning point in building a strong and strategic Italian supply chain for marine renewables. The direct involvement of an industrial group with over €17 billion in revenue, 107 plants worldwide, and a recognized leadership in submarine interconnections represents far more than a symbolic act. It is a clear signal of the maturity of Italy’s offshore ecosystem, with important implications for adjacent sectors such as fisheries and the broader blue economy.
The entry of Prysmian into AERO brings with it crucial industrial expertise in the design and installation of high-voltage submarine cables—essential components for connecting large offshore wind farms to electricity grids. This not only accelerates the energy transition, but also strengthens the infrastructure needed to sustainably harness marine resources. If managed effectively, this evolution can become an opportunity for the entire Italian coastal sector—from shipbuilding to aquaculture, from artisanal fishing to port logistics.
According to Fulvio Mamone Capria, President of AERO, Prysmian’s contribution goes beyond industrial strength:

In this context, the Italian fishing industry must also reconsider its position. The expansion of offshore energy production is already reshaping marine space usage, introducing new constraints—but also new opportunities. Across other European contexts like the North Sea, we are seeing early-stage integration of aquaculture within wind farms, with synergies ranging from reduced environmental impact to diversified income sources for local fishing communities.
Prysmian’s entry into AERO enhances the possibility of replicating these hybrid models in Italy, where the sea can become a place of convergence rather than conflict—bringing together sustainability, energy production, and traditional marine sectors. For fisheries, this means having the chance to contribute—rather than merely adapt—to the shaping of Italy’s energy future.
