Spain Secures 40 Additional Tons of Red Shrimp Through France Agreement

Spain Secures 40 Additional Tons of Red Shrimp Through France Agreement – With a bilateral agreement signed with France, Spain has secured an additional quota of nearly 40 tons of red shrimp — a move that significantly strengthens the operational capacity of the Mediterranean fleet. The announcement was made by Spain’s Secretary General for Fisheries, Isabel Artime, during a meeting with representatives of autonomous communities and the coastal fisheries sector.

According to Artime, the agreement is “a concrete contribution to the continuity of the sector’s activities,” offering new opportunities for access to one of the most valuable and sought-after species in the Mediterranean. Red shrimp, a resource of high commercial value, continues to be a cornerstone for the economic balance of many local fishing communities.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to assess the current state of Mediterranean fisheries, analyzing key indicators such as remaining effort days, available quotas, certification procedures, and other control measures. These tools are essential for the sustainable management of a valuable and vulnerable resource, often under significant environmental and economic pressure.

The additional red shrimp quota is not just an immediate economic boost — it also supports strategic planning for the sector. In this context, cooperation between Member States — as demonstrated by the agreement with France — proves essential to ensure efficient and coordinated management of shared resources.

It is no coincidence that the focus on Mediterranean fisheries is intensifying: climate change, market fluctuations, and new EU regulations are creating an increasingly complex environment for seafood companies. Increasing the red shrimp quota also means giving the fleet room to maneuver — providing regulatory certainty and the right tools to innovate without sacrificing competitiveness.

The Spain-France agreement for an additional 40 tons of red shrimp is a tangible response to the sector’s current needs. Beyond the immediate benefit to the Mediterranean fleet, the deal marks progress in international cooperation toward sustainable fisheries management.
